Kindergarten and the 12 years of Elementary and Secondary Education”. That’s what K to 12 means; a new transformation in the Philippines educational system.
Before the K to 12 have been introduced in our country, the Philippines is the only Asian country and one of the three countries in the world which has only 10 year basic education style. Because of this, it is believed that the Filipino students have insufficient time to do the assigned task because the curriculum was designed to have 12 years of education and not 10 years. One of the very clear results of the said insufficiency was most of the high school graduates in the country were not prepared to go to college or to work. They have no basic skills needed to serve in the different agencies.
The grade 7 teachers all over the country have attended different trainings and seminars in different subject areas in preparation for the implementation of the above mentioned curriculum.
The Araling Panlipunan teachers in region III who will teach the grade 7students held their training at Bulacan State University, City of Malolos. This 5 day training workshop had the following objectives :(1) to explain the K to 12 curriculum and its objectives , (2) to discuss the K to 12 Araling Panlipunan outline , content ,teacher’s guide and module , (3)to focus on the grade 7 curriculum outline , teacher’s guide and module , (4) teach historical concept , kind and limitations of sources , importance of primary sources , examination of historical evidences through the primary sources which are needed to teach correctly the context of the grade 7 curriculum , (5) to train the teachers in the historical abilities as application of the aforementioned objectives , (6) to give the teachers a chance to have their demostration teaching to show their competencies and effectiveness in implementing of the curriculum , (7) to identify the possible issues in the implementation of the curriculum , and suggest some ways or solution to solve this issues .
There were three to five modules each grading period and three to four activities /exercise each module in Araling Panlipunan ;grade 7 . This will be taught three hours a week wherein there were ten weeks each grading period and four grading periods each year.
The trainings and seminars were really big help to the teachers to properly implement the new curriculum for this is a transformation to needs the Filipino students to have a quality education, just like what the 1987 Philippine Constitution said: “The state shall establish, maintain, and support a complete, adequate, and integrated system of education relevant to the needs of the people and the society”.
